Kuah Kari Ikan

Yum - even if I did cook it myself :). There's a serious lack of good M'sian food in Chicago. So on my recent trip back to Aus I brought back a whole box of M'sian spices/premixes. Tonight I got cooked up some curry fish and fried up some roti canai. I didn't make the canai though :). Good stuff. My mouth is stuill watering...

Daube of Beef

People often ask me if I do much cooking and if I eat in the cafteria at work. The answers are yes and no respectively. I enjoy cooking - the shopping, prep & cooking parts. Cleaning is just an unfortunate necessity. As for eating in the cafeteria well I'm pretty sick of their food - maybe it's because I always have the same thing when I go there. But that's coz all the other stuff is crap.

The next questions that often follow are where do you find the time and do you end up eating the same thing for 5 days in a row. The answer to these 2 questions is that I choose recipes on how long I can keep them/freeze them. If it's something that I can't freeze then I'll only cook a small amount. If it's something that I can freeze then I cook heaps and freeze the left overs. This allows me to defrost cooked meals when I don't have time to cook. Before SY left she cooked heaps of food so that I had some care pkgs in the freezer. Today I defrosted the second to last package :(

Below is a pic of one of the recipes that I can freeze - daube of beef. This is one of those set it and forget it kinda recipes where you cook it in the oven for 3hrs.

Ipoh Hor Fun

Credit must go to Kwan (aka Prince No left foot). Unfortunately it's not nearly as good as the stuff you can get in Ipoh but it still good stuff. I'm sure I missed a lot of ingredients. Even the hor fun was of the vietnamese dry variety. Oh well. The prawn & chicken broth was still good.

EAT!

My blog, "What's cookin'?", wasn't meant to just be about food but everyone who knows me knows that I'm big on food - both eating and cooking. I've been neglecting to put some food posts up of late so here are some to try and make ammends.

My latest crave is for sangas (sandwiches). I've been really getting back into the humble sanga of late. The new ingredient that I've discovered is Giardiniera which is Italian style pickled vegetables. These make a sanga gourmet. You can see them below, between the tomatoes and lettuce.

Sguardi sul mondo (A glance at the world)

It's just in the initial stages and it's all in Italian, but pictures have no language barriers. Really great pics taken on a 350D. I can't wait to see more so keep it updated Francesco!

Check out Francesco's work at http://sguardisulmondo.blogspot.com/

Here's a quick sample of one of his works. It was taken outside his place in Turin. For high-res versions of his work please contact him directly.

Dig that groove

I've been asking this guy to come to Chicago and play a few sets so that the clubs can get a taste of what a real deejay sounds like - not top forty, not being a selecta and putting more effort in than just using the crossfader. Well unfortunately he's not going to be able to make it just yet coz he's off the motherland. Anyway you can stay tuned to Jon's adventures at http://digthatgroove.blogspot.com/
